According to local residents, the constant rainfalls in Myawaddy town in Karen State, whichresulted in flooding, and the prices of goods have also increased steadily.
A local man said that since the last week of July, endless rains and water flows from the mountains ,have caused flash flooding in the low-lying areas of Myawaddy Town, and in addition, the essential food, such as rice, has risen from 30,000 kyats per six peittha bag to 36,000 kyats and the prices of other commodities also included.“Rice used to cost 30,000 for 1 bag of 6 peittha bags, now it has become 36,000, an oil used to cost 4,000 for 1 liter, now it costs 4,500, 4,800, potatoes used to cost 4,000, now it has become 4,500, and onion has not increased much. It is still 3,000 kyats. As for instant noodles, it used to cost 18,000 per patch, but now it’s over 20,000,” he said.
A local woman said that there is a shortage of eggs in most of the shops in Myawaddy and can’t buy them now.
“Eggs are out of stock in almost every shop because of the floods and the egg trucks aren’t coming. In addition, they can’t go anywhere now,” he continued.
Also, according to local residents, Ward No. 1, Ward No. 2 Ward No. 4, and War No.5 in Myawaddy Town, the area from such Wards to Asia Road is flooded and so the work has been stopped, moreover the price of goods has risen, which making socio-economic life difficult.
A member of the social assistant said that, due to the floods in Myawaddy Town, more than 800 local residents from low-lying areas were placed at the Koe Na Win Monastery, Tawya Monastery and Kya Khat Taw Monastery.
There is enduring rain in the regions within the Karen State such as Myawaddy, Kawkareik, Kyondoe, and Kyar Inn Seik Gyi, and according to KNLA military sources, there are ongoing conflicts between the Military Council regimes and the KNLA joint forces in the area.
